The Wisdom Of Chocolat
Anyone who has seen the movie “Chocolat” understands that this film is about more than the tasty elixir of the cacao plant we have grown to love. The wisdom of “Chocolat” is found in Pere Henri’s final sermon in which he says, “I think that we can’t go around measuring our goodness by what we don’t do, by what we deny ourselves, what we resist, and who we exclude. I think we’ve got to measure goodness by what we embrace, what we create and who we include.” So, what do you embrace? What are you creating? Who do you include? Embrace your own goodness by reaching outside your comfort zone into the creative realms of love and joy.
Be A People Whisperer
After recently watching several consecutive episodes of “The Dog Whisperer,” I began to see how the wisdom of Cesar Millan applied to relationships with human beings. Cesar recommends the posture and attitude of “calm and assertive,” which works well regardless of whether you are dealing with a four-legged or two legged. When you are calm and assertive with another person, you are basically saying, “I know where I stand, and I am firm in my position.” When you know where you stand and your are firm in your position, you will convey trust and respect to others, engendering the same feelings in them. Become a people whisperer, and whisper peace.
Voices of Change: Honoring Living Composers
Voices of Change is a Dallas-based “Pioneer Professional Chamber Music Ensemble dedicated to the performance of music of our time.” Go to Voicesofchange.com and learn about upcoming events in which the music of living composers will be performed in a variety of interesting venues. Many of the featured composers are in their early to mid-twenties, hearing their music performed live for the first time. Voices of Change looks for, honors and celebrates these young musicians, in many cases helping them to jump-start a successful career. Honor the creative artists within you and all around you, and make the world better for us all.
Grow Your Self At SelfGrowth.com
David Riklan started Selfgrowth.com with the simple and clear mission of providing “quality information and great resources for people to improve their lives.” In the process, he has developed the number one self-improvement web site on the Internet, as ranked by the major search engines. When you visit selfgrowth.com, you will find links to positive news, success skills, health, relationships and finances. Here is yet another example of good people doing good things to make this world a better place for you and me. There is an explosion of love, joy, creativity and kindness on this planet. Look for evidence of it and join the magnificent journey.
Peace For Kids
KidsPeace is an organization that has been helping children for one hundred and twenty five years. Go to kidspeace.org to learn about the resources they have developed to help troubled teens and to address the tragedy of school shootings. They have created teencentral.net, a web site where teens can tell their stories and get help and support from their peers. The site encourages visitors to “Log on and work it out,” and “Look around, get involved.” Open your heart and your arms and embrace the outcasts, the misfits, the lost and the lonely within you and all around you. It is the courage of kindness and inclusion that will keep us safe.
The Stories We Are Told
What stories are you listening to? What stories do you believe about your health, about aging, about war, peace and the environment? Who is telling these stories and what is their motivation? If the stories you hear are making you afraid and angry, consider looking for some different ones. Read Ode, the magazine “for intelligent optimists,” and Spirituality and Health to get stories that will inspire and uplift you. Get creative, and make up your own stories. After careful research, the story I’m making up is that this life is a great privilege, that we are magnificent as human beings, getting better every day. And we’ve only just begun.
The Amazing Power of Placebo
Have you ever given much thought to what actually makes placebos work? Volume 4, Issue 4 of Ode Magazine has an article entitled, “The Healing Power of Placebos.” You can read it online at Odemagazine.com. What we’re learning is that what you do regarding your health may not be as important as how you feel about it. When I have a client facing a medical treatment dilemma, I strongly encourage her to choose an approach that feels right, one she can believe in. It is your inner physician that is speaking to you when you have a strong faith in one choice and great reservations about another. Educate yourself. Trust yourself.
